Interview With Midknight Rider... a Nominee!

We are keeping to our strict schedule to make sure we can give you all the best experience for our first year hosting the Awards, so here's another interview with someone whose work has been nominated for the Sam & Jack Multimedia Awards!

At the moment of posting this blog she has received five nominations! Well, let's introduce you all to...

MidKnight Rider!

This author lives in Seattle and owns a horse in real life. As a matter of fact, her penname was inspired by her horse!

MidKnight Rider has been watching movies and television for a long time and when she learned of Stargate: SG-1 back in 2002, she could tell from the very beginning that there were going to be sparks between Sam and Jack. In the '80s there was a whole lot of "will they, won't they" on television and she didn't want the 'ship to be one of those... However, she was also familiar enough with the military to know it was not going to be allowed to happen [due to the chain of command and anti-fraternization regulations]. That took some of the interest out of it for her but she started watching the show anyways because she was hopelessly drawn to Daniel Jackson! Fortunately for us, the way the Sam/Jack ship was portrayed pulled her in as well, so she started writing about them too.

The appeal of the ship is the way they complement each other and how faithful they are - with the exception of Sam losing her mind in season 7/8, she added. Another thing that's special about this relationship is the potential Sam has to rescue Jack and vice versa, be that emotionally or physically.

Right now she has lots of stuff planned for Sam and Jack's future in her ongoing Moonlight and Steel series and spends an inordinate amount of time discussing them with her two mentors. Aside from writing fanfiction and having a tumblr account, she isn't really active in the fandom across the internet, though.

"Just do it. You'll learn. You'll grow."

MidKnight Rider has been writing fanfiction since being published in fanzines in the '80, for Star Trek. It's difficult to say how long a fic will take her to finish as it all depends on the kind of story she wants to tell. For the last four years she's been writing two continuing storylines for Stargate: SG-1 and they still aren't done, but other works took less time to complete. For MidKnight, stories basically play themselves out in her head as if she is watching them on a screen, a phenomenon that is probably familiar to many writers. This also means, in her case, that she doesn't really plan anything; she just starts writing about what she sees and adds descriptive words when necessary.

To avoid being influenced by other people's work, she doesn't really read much fanfiction in her spare time. Sometimes her mentors will recommend something to her and occasionally she reads their work too.

Her advice to other (beginning) writers? Just do it. You'll learn, grow and meet awesome people along the way.

So far, MidKnight Rider hasn't won a fanfiction award yet for her work and she's honored to have received 5 nominations so far for this year's Sam & Jack Multimedia Awards. She became aware of the existence of the SJMA via tumblr and is planning on submitting her own nominations sometime soon.

As for her competition... well, one of them, Bluemoonmaverick [7 nominations so far], is one of the aforementioned mentors and MidKnight Rider's work is actually a tag to hers! She is only familiar with one other story in that category but felt it was more Sam and Daniel friendship (which she loves) than Sam and Jack ship.

MidKnight Rider has received the following nominations:

Best Tag - Not An Easy Day To Forget
Best Comedy - Sir, We Have a Situation
Best Drama - Fortunate SonBest Angst - Broken MirrorBest Original Character - Fortunate Son

  1. MidKnight Rider is one of the very first ff writers I ever read. She has inspired me to write, write, write. I can't believe how much she's written over the years. I'd love to spend a day just wandering around her mind to see what goes on in there. :) I've read all the stories she's been nominated for, and they are all wonderful.

  2. Yay, MidKnight Rider! She is a lovely person, and one of my favorite Sam/Jack authors. She gets characterizations EXACTLY right, she's creative with scenarios and great with worldbuilding, and I just love reading about the way her Sam and Jack interact with each other and those around them. Full disclosure: I am one of her betas and might be responsible for one or two of those nominations. ;-)
